On this episode of The Unscaled Travel Show, we had the pleasure of speaking with Courtney Muro, a travel photographer and content strategist who fell in love with Colombia and its vibrant culture, biodiversity, and entrepreneurial spirit. Whether you’re planning your first visit or dreaming of exploring this incredible country, Courtney’s insights offer a unique and personal perspective.
Why Colombia?
Courtney’s journey to Colombia began after graduate school, where she planned a short stay to immerse herself in Spanish. Drawn initially by the country’s reputation for clear and easy-to-learn Spanish, she quickly fell for Colombia’s warmth—both its people and its tropical climate. Arriving just as the country’s decades-long civil war ended, Courtney witnessed a Colombia ready to welcome the world.
“I never felt unsafe there, ever. The culture is warm, the biodiversity is astounding, and it’s a place that leaves a mark on your heart.”
What Makes Colombia Special?
For Courtney, Colombia stands apart for its extraordinary biodiversity and entrepreneurial culture. From the snow-capped mountains visible from the beaches of Parque Tayrona to the bustling, art-filled streets of Medellín, Colombia offers an experience unlike any other.
“Other than Brazil, Colombia might be the most biodiverse country on the planet. And the entrepreneurial spirit is remarkable—almost everyone I knew worked for themselves.”
Courtney’s Must-Visit Destinations
If you’re visiting Colombia for the first time, Courtney has a few recommendations to get you started:
- Parque Tayrona:
A national park where jungle meets Caribbean waters. Expect breathtaking views, unique wildlife (think caimans and monkeys), and a chance to trek alongside indigenous people in their traditional attire.“The moment you enter Parque Tayrona, it feels magical. But be respectful—this is a sacred space, and overtourism has led to the park being closed for restoration at times.” - Medellín:
Known as the “City of Eternal Spring,” Medellín is a hub of innovation and art. Don’t miss:- Comuna 13: A former conflict zone turned vibrant street-art haven.
- Tejo: A traditional Colombian game involving gunpowder that Courtney describes as “exploding horseshoes.”
- Cartagena:
A coastal city steeped in history and romance, Cartagena is where Courtney tied the knot. Don’t miss the traditional caminata, a post-wedding street parade complete with dancers and music.
Food and Flavors of Colombia
Colombia’s culinary scene is as diverse as its landscapes. Here are Courtney’s top picks:
- Ajiaco: A hearty chicken and potato soup served with a platter of toppings like capers, avocado, and cilantro.
- Bandeja Paisa: A calorie-packed traditional breakfast created for farmers.
- Coconut Rice: Labor-intensive but absolutely worth it.
- Fine Dining: Don’t miss Carmen or El Cielo in Medellín for multi-course culinary experiences. In Cartagena, Candé is a must for a taste of traditional Cartagena flavors.
“In Colombia, even the Instagram-worthy dishes taste as good as they look. If it’s on fire, order it!”
Hidden Gems and Local Experiences
Courtney urges visitors to go beyond the guidebooks and immerse themselves in local culture:
- Explore Remote Beaches: Head to La Guajira near the Venezuelan border for untouched beauty and stays with indigenous communities.
- Venture into the Coffee Region: For lush landscapes and charming villages.
- Stay with Locals: Spanish immersion programs or Airbnb can help you connect with local families.
“Colombians are incredibly welcoming. Staying with locals is the best way to experience the real Colombia and maybe even make lifelong friends.”
Practical Advice for Travelers
- Skip the Pablo Tours: While curiosity about Colombia’s past is natural, Courtney advises against tours that glamorize the drug cartels, likening it to romanticizing terrorism in other countries.
- Stay Safe: Petty theft is common, so keep an eye on your belongings. Men should be cautious about Tinder scams.
- Respect the Locals: Colombia’s history is complex, and locals are proud of how far their country has come.
Colombia is a place to fall in love with
Courtney’s love for Colombia is contagious, and her stories—from mud-soaked treks through Parque Tayrona to savoring bowls of ajiaco—paint a picture of a country bursting with life, beauty, and resilience.
“Colombia is a place to fall in love with—its culture, its people, and its energy. Just don’t forget to respect the locals and embrace the adventure.”
