Morning: Exploring the Heart of Columbia
Delightful Breakfast at Rambo’s Fat Cat Biscuits
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at Rambo’s Fat Cat Biscuits. Rambo’s is a local favorite known for its delicious, freshly made biscuits. Trust me when I tell you that these biscuits are huge and filling. I had the classic bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit and damn near had to take a nap afterward. It was slap-yo-momma good.
Rambo’s offers dine-in or to-go options, so depending on your schedule, you can adjust accordingly.
Great brunch alternatives: Il Giorgione or smallSugar. Il Giorgione on Devine Street is normally known for its gourmet thin-crust pizzas and pasta, but they also boast a tasty brunch menu with a Spritz flight that I highly recommend.
smallSugar is a wonderful spot to grab a freshly baked pastry, a cup of coffee, and enjoy the morning on their deck. This is a popular stop for locals so don’t be surprised to see a (quickly moving) line of patrons waiting to order.
Stroll Down Main Street District
After breakfast, head over to the Main Street District. This lively area is the perfect place to get a feel for the city. Thanks to a recent revitalization of the area, this is where you’ll find a mix of art, cultural events, historic buildings, trendy locally-owned shops, and picturesque cafes.
This is where you can find the iconic Soda City Market, where, on average, at least 150 producer-only vendors line Main Street each Saturday morning, year-round.
On my visit to Columbia, I noted how clean the city center and downtown area seem to be. You’ll find some fun places to snap photos and boast to your friends on Instagram about how you’re traveling, and they’re not.
Not that anyone would do that.
Visit the South Carolina State House
Next, make your way to the South Carolina State House, a beautiful building that’s a must-see for history enthusiasts. Take a self-guided audio tour to learn about the history and architecture of this iconic structure. Take a stroll around the manicured grounds to see the monuments, statues, and state plaques if time permits.
The original state house, completed in 1790, was burned by Gen. Sherman’s troops on February 17, 1865, during the Civil War. (Yes, there’s a plaque for that.)
Mid-Morning: Cultural and Natural Treasures
Columbia Museum of Art
A visit to Columbia wouldn’t be complete without stopping by the Columbia Museum of Art on Main Street. This museum is a great place to see works by local artists as well as international masterpieces.
I was able to visit this beautiful museum during their biannual Arts & Draughts event, which combines art, live music, DIY art projects, scavenger hunts, food vendors, and beer. What could be better? Not much. I had an absolute blast at this event.
The museum also hosts rotating exhibits, so there’s always something new to see.
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden
For a fun and educational experience for the whole family, head to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. The zoo is an immensely popular destination home to a wide variety of animals and beautiful botanical gardens.
On my visit, the rhinos and sea lions grabbed my attention the most and I know I took way too many pictures.
The zoo’s conservation efforts, such as the AZA Florida Reef Tract Rescue Project and their Going Green initiative are commendable and make a positive impact on the world around us, and it’s a great spot for families. Kids absolutely love the splash pad and Waterfall Junction.
Lunch, James Beard Style
Enjoy Lunch at City Grit
Eating at City Grit in Columbia can be a transformative experience, which may be a word that travel writers like myself use too often, but in this case, it’s not hyperbole.
City Grit offers a uniquely charming atmosphere near the city center and provides amazing food topped with tremendous service. It was a 2023 James Beard Foundation Finalist for “Outstanding Restauranteur,” and if that’s not enough of a reason to visit, we have one more: They pay their workers a living wage, so there is a “no tipping” policy. There’s a reason locals rave about City Grit. I would recommend a go-to meal option here, but everything on the menu looks to be damn good.
Lunch alternative: Spotted Salamander Cafe. Spotted Salamander Cafe has been featured in a Who’s Who list of media publications because it features an always-changing menu (based on what’s available in-season) with incredible always freshly made southern comfort classics. I was fortunate enough to grab lunch here and the homemade oatmeal cream pie sandwich was my favorite thing ever.
Afternoon: History and Outdoor Activities
South Carolina State Museum
After lunch you have more than a few options. The first is a visit to the South Carolina State Museum. This museum regularly ranks on these trip aggregator sites as one of the best things to do in Columbia. It offers exhibits on natural history, science, technology, and art. It’s another great way to learn about the history and culture of South Carolina.
Anne Frank Center
Another options is the Anne Frank Center. The Anne Frank Center at the University of South Carolina is an official partner of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and the only partner site in North America.
It brings to life, in vivid documented stories and photographs, the life of the young Jewish girl who documented her and her family’s harrowing tale of life in German-occupied Amsterdam during World War II.
Congaree National Park
If you’re feeling the need to be outdoors then this is a great option. For those who love the outdoors, a trip to Congaree National Park is a must.
Just a short drive from downtown Columbia, this park is home to the old-growth bottomland forest and offers plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and bird-watching. The biking trails are also a great idea for an active afternoon.
Book a kayaking adventure with Palmetto Outdoors and you won’t regret it. I went on kayaking trip with Palmetto and made some life long memories. The forest was gorgeous and the kayaking was a lot of fun!
Late Afternoon: Scenic Spots and Shopping
Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park
Head back to the city and take a relaxing walk along the Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park. This gorgeous area is perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride along their many trails. The park offers beautiful views of the Congaree River and is a popular spot for both locals and visitors. Pack a few snacks or a lunch and enjoy the picnic tables while you’re there as well.
Also, your leashed fur baby is welcome to join.
Shopping on Devine Street
If you’re in the mood for some shopping, Devine Street is the place to be. Devine Street is lined with boutique shops such as Just The Thing and Brittons of Columbia, local artisan stops, and trendy eateries (such as Il Giorgione).
It’s a great way to spend a late afternoon and find unique souvenirs.
Evening: Dining and Entertainment
Dinner at One of Columbia’s Favorite Restaurants
As the day winds down, treat yourself to dinner at one of Columbia’s favorite restaurants. Whether you’re craving Southern comfort food, international cuisine, or fresh seafood, you’ll find it at these locations. Some popular options include Motor Supply Co. Bistro and Halls Chophouse.
Motor Supply Co. Bistro is an American-style eatery with a daily revolving menu. I had a delicious dinner there and can’t recommend it enough. It’s a very popular place though so reservations are highly recommended.
Halls Chophouse is a more upscale steakhouse choice. The atmosphere is fantastic for a nice weekend dinner or a business lunch. They have a great selection of seafood fare as well.
A great alternative is Bourbon. There you can grab an Old Fashioned and an incredible bowl of seafood gumbo like I did. Both were tasty and I highly recommend them.
Live Music and Nightlife
After dinner, enjoy some live music and nightlife in the Capital City. The Vista is one of Columbia’s more popular options for billiards and live music. You’ll want to check their website for an upcoming list of drink and music specials.
It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the local scene.
Must-See Nearby Locations
University of South Carolina Campus
If you have time, take a stroll through the University of South Carolina campus. This historic site is home to beautiful buildings, lush green spaces, and the famous Horseshoe. It’s a great place to experience the collegiate atmosphere and learn about the university’s rich history.
Historic Columbia
For a deeper dive into the city’s past, visit Historic Columbia. This non-profit organization offers guided tours of historic homes and sites, providing a fascinating glimpse into Columbia’s history. Don’t miss the Robert Mills House and Hampton-Preston Mansion, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Another great option is the Museum of Reconstruction Era at Woodrow Wilson Family Home.
Craft Beer Options
Savage Craft Ale Works
Savage Craft Ale Works is a popular craft option in the city that can fill up quickly on days with beautiful weather because the bulk of their seating is outdoors. Get there early. Relax all day.
Hunter-Gatherer Brewery at The Hangar
Grab a Golden Ale at The Hangar and enjoy a bit of time in a very unique setting. Honestly, everything on the menu is good.
Day Trip Ideas
Lake Murray
If you’re looking for a day trip, consider visiting Lake Murray. Just a short drive from Columbia, this large reservoir offers plenty of outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming. It’s another great way to enjoy the natural beauty of South Carolina.
Myrtle Beach and Folly Beach
For a beach day, head to Myrtle Beach or Folly Beach. Both are within a few hours’ drive and offer beautiful sandy shores, water sports, and vibrant boardwalks. It’s a great way to relax by the ocean and enjoy all the coastal charms you can get your sandy little paws on.
Where to Stay
Hotel Trundle
For an overnight stay, Hotel Trundle is a top choice. This boutique hotel is located in the city center and offers stylish accommodations with a touch of Southern hospitality. It’s the perfect place to rest and recharge after a busy day of exploring.
A great alternative is Cambria Hotel downtown. I stayed here on a recent trip and it had clean rooms, a friendly staff, and convenient in-and-out valet service.
Final Thoughts
Columbia, South Carolina, is, in my opinion, an underrated travel destination with an extremely rich history, vibrant culture, and plenty of attractions.
From the South Carolina State House to Congaree National Park, there’s no shortage of things to see and do. Whether you’re here for a day or a longer stay, you’re sure to have an incredible time and make lasting memories.
Happy travels!
