I like to travel to places I find interesting, fully believing that not every trip needs to be an Instagrammable mountain pose followed by copy-and-pasted inspirational quote.

When I get to these places, I like to kick back and enjoy a good cocktail. But not just any cocktail. An Old Fashioned.
In fact, fair or not, I judge a lot of places on their ability (or more specifically their bartenders ability) to make a great drink, or miss the mark completely.
Then I blog about it because why not?
May 2018.
What is it with Canada and maple syrup?
These guys move maple syrup product with Escobarian-like passion.
It’s in their cereal, their shampoo, and thankfully, in their Old Fashioned’s.
My wife and I stumbled upon Nautical Nellies restaurant while exploring downtown on a quick trip to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
The Old Fashioned was already my preferred cocktail of choice but it was years before I would start keeping tabs on my habit or this blog, so unfortunately I have no idea which whiskey was used or what their exact make-up was… all I can remember is the the not-overly-sweet taste of maple syrup in this drink.
It was the perfect blend of whiskey, bitters and sweet. Whoever was behind the bar that evening deserved a tip of the cap and the generous tip I left afterwards.
I ordered two, but I wanted four, the ultimate sign of a great drink and the perfect end to that beautiful day.
To this day, it remains my favorite Old Fashioned.
